Trade name

A trade name (ticaret unvanı) is the name under which a merchant conducts business and which distinguishes the merchant from other traders. Every merchant must register the trade name with the trade registry and use it on business documents.

For individual merchants the trade name consists of the person's name and surname, while company names must indicate the company type. A registered trade name grants an exclusive right; unauthorised use by others may be prohibited and can give rise to damages claims.

Trade names are often confused with trademarks. A trade name identifies the merchant, whereas a trademark identifies goods or services. Registering a name as a trade name does not by itself secure trademark protection; the two regimes operate separately.
